Letter from the Editor
It's been an extremely busy time for UNA-MD, with the UNA Annual Meeting taking place in early June, meetings with Ambassador John Bolton at the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs and with Senator Paul Sarbanes. We also just hosted a lecture by chair of UNA-NCA Human Rights Task Force, Dr. John Salzberg, at the Towson Library. All these events have been very productive for the chapter, providing a lot of insight into how UNA-MD can make its efforts in advocating for the UN even more effective. A large focus of the UNA Annual Meeting was around the "Day on the Hill", during which representatives from our chapter, including President Bud Hankins and YPIC member Anne Genin, met with Maryland Congressman Wayne Gilchrest and Senator Barbara Mikulski. We also were in attendance at the business and advocacy committee meetings of the Council of Chapters and Divisions. A full report on the proceedings will be produced for all members shortly. Also, our YPIC chair, Jen Miller, has been named to the Education Committee of the NCCA, which is the organization that runs the National Model UN conference. This is shortly after she finished compiling the YPIC Kick-Start Guide, available at http://www.ypic.org/. Even more exciting are all the events we have coming up in July. Check out our calendar or the following stories for some dates. And as always, UNA-MD is driven by its membership so please contact us with all of your ideas and enthusiasm.

Maryland Blue Crabs on the Eastern Shore
One of the important chapter goals for the year is to expand on our program of speakers and community outreach, but the only way to achieve this is to increase our membership and to improve our fundraising activities. What better way for the Maryland chapter to achieve both than to have a crab feast on the Bay?
Join your fellow UNA-MD members and their friends and family on the Eastern Shore as we share good food and great times. Held at the beautiful home of Bud and Harriett Hankins, this event will help to raise money to fund the important activities we undertake throughout the year. There will be plenty of crabs, corn on the cob, beer, sodas, desserts, and other food, as well as a variety of boating excursions available on Fishing Creek.
Tickets to the event are $35 per person (children under 12 free). The reservation deadline is July 10, 2006. To order tickets, you may either print the flier from our web site and mail it to the address listed, or you may call 410.228.2018. Proceeds benefit the UNA-MD general fund. For more information about this event, please contact us at info@unamd.org. This event is open to the public, so bring along anyone that is interested! Community Outreach in Bel Air
UNA-MD will continue its community outreach by having an information table at this excellent community event. The purpose of the Bel Air Book Festival is to celebrate reading by bringing together those resources that promote and support literacy in the community. UNA-MD views this as an opportunity to promote interest in the literary traditions of global cultures and by extension, to help raise awareness of issues confronting humanity around the world.
Featured events include presentations and book signings by numerous authors including Mary Jo Putney, Jack O'Neill, Margaret Meacham, Katie Moose, Stephen Parlato, Elaine Bunting, Jack Tanner, Becky Titelman, Jack Eddinger, Wendie Old, Bill Bates, and Karol Bloch. In additon, there will be appearances by The Book Guys Radio Show, the Chesapeake Storytellers Guild, and Kimmie Meissner, world skating champion. The program will close with a performance by the Bel Air Jazz Ensemble beginning at 4:30.
If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact us at info@unamd.org or our event coordinator, Guy Djoken, at gpdjoken@unescocenterforpeace.net. For more information, visit our web site at http://www.unamd.org/content/view/50/47/.

UNA-MD Seeks Advocacy Coordinator
Our chapter is now looking for a dynamic individual to fill the important role of Advocacy Coordinator. This person would be responsible for staying up to date on the latest initiatives from UNA-USA and our regional representatives. Using briefings from these sources and information gathered from other outlets, such as those on the Communications page on our web site, the Advocacy Coordinator will lead the chapter's efforts in legislative contacts and other awareness-raising activities. This is a crucial position within the chapter, so please only apply if you are strongly interested and will have the time and energy to commit to this role. If you have any questions regarding this role or would be interested in applying, please contact us at info@unamd.org by July 31st.
