COMMENTARY ON GLOBAL AFFAIRS
UNA-MD members often wish to make their voice heard, whether to urge Congress or the White House to take a stand on a particular issue or to simply mention some uplifting news. We will make an effort to collect and present these sorts of items here, on our Commentary page. If you would like to submit items for inclusion here, please send them items to us at info@unamd.org and we will work with you to make the content available. Commentary Contents An Open Letter to Maryland’s Representatives in Congress from the United Nations Association of Maryland by Ken Allen et al - 09/27/2006 For the 2006 election, the Board of Directors of UNA-MD felt that it was important to urge Congress to carefully examine the treatment of human rights and how the United States conducts itself at home and abroad, particularly with regard to the ongoing struggle to understand and carry out the so-called "war on terror". A PDF version of an open letter to MD's representatives in Congress is available here for download. A Brief Word on the Nobel Peace Prize by Ruth Smith - 11/10/2006 More Good News: Nobel Peace Prize Committee Affirms Belief that Economic Justice Promotes Peace. By awarding the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize to Bangladesh's Grameen Bank and its founder, Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Committee gives credence to the belief that economic justice is the way to achieve a peaceful world. The Grameen Bank provides small loans to the world's poorest residents to help them start their own small businesses. Loans are made without collateral. Microfinance, as this approach is called, has helped many people, especially women, to break the cycle of poverty for their families and to promote community development. |
