Current Board Members Look Forward to Serving the Chapter

The following individuals have been elected to serve on the Executive Board of UNA-MD and will be serving two-year terms. The decision was made to stagger elections so as to preserve continuity in leadership, so half of the board members' terms will expire each year. Full information regarding the nomination, election, and terms of service for the UNA-MD Chapter Executive Board can be found in our bylaws.

CHAPTER EXECUTIVE BOARD BIOS

KEN ALLEN (President)
Kenneth W. Allen was raised in Florida and educated at the University of Florida (B.A. in Political Science), Harvard (M.A. and PH.D. in Political Science) and Johns Hopkins University (M.S. in Computer Science). He has worked as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at UMBC, Executive Director of the 1978 Baltimore County Commission on Charter Revision, and Director of Information Systems at the Baltimore County Police Department. He has three grown children and lives with his wife of 34 years in Loch Raven Village in Baltimore County.

LANE BERK
Lane Berk is a long time resident of Maryland, interrupted periodically by her extensive travels abroad. She has earned B.A. degrees in Art and Philosophy from Bryn Mawr College, as well as an an M.A. in Moral Sciences and D. Litt. in International Law at Cambridge. In addition, Lane has pursued non-degreed studies at the Berlitz, the University of Innsbruck and the Johns Hopkins University. Lane has published, worked, and volunteered in a variety of fields, including anthropology, modern art, race relations, sociology, the Living Classrooms program, the U.S. Peace Corps (South Africa), and was a founding member of UNA-MD. She has also served as an investigator/correspondent for UNESCO in the Gernam de-Nazification program, an arbitrator for the Maryland Commission on Interracial Problems and Relations, and an advisor to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Lane continues to be an ardent supporter of major arts organizations in Maryland and studies foreign languages.

DAVID CAMMACK
David Cammack has been a UN advocate ever since his 1947 graduation from the US Naval Academy, especially in the interest of improving its structure to achieve the vision of the former World Federalist Association. David has been involved with the WFA (now Citizens for Global Solutions) since 1970, and served as the Baltimore chapter president from 1985 to 2000. As a retired Episcopal clergyman, he coordinates Baltimore's interfaith chapter of United Religions Initiative (URI) for world fellowship and peace building, is active in the Interfaith Coalition for Peace, and has been a UNA member for over 10 years.

TIM DAVIS (Treasurer)
Tim Davis received a BA in Philosophy from Earlham College and a Master of Administrative Science degree from Johns Hopkins University. He has worked for 30 years in Human Relations with a health care concentration. For the last 14 years he was Director of Human Relations for the Johns Hopkins Community Physicians Division. He has belonged to the Maryland Health Care Human Resources Association for 20 years, and served as treasurer of that organization for 7 years.

GUY DJOKEN
Guy P. Djoken is native of Cameroon, Africa who attended the Graduate School of Management in Accra, Ghana, before moving to Frederick MD where obtained an MBA in Management in 2004 from the Frostburg State University. Mr. Djoken's work for UNESCO in Douala, Cameroon resulted in him once being named "Chairman of Human Rights Day Commission." Mr. Djoken is the Founder and Executive Director of the Frederick Center for Peace, a 501 (c)(3) organization working with the Maryland Chapter of the United Nations Association to promote the United Nations and UNESCO. Also, on February 24th, 2006, Guy Djoken joined Eveline Herfkens, United Nations Executive Coordinator for the Millennium Campaign and Dr. Sofialeticia Morales, Senior Advisor for the MDGs at PAHO/WHO at the Pan American Health Organization in Washington DC to advocate for the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals). Mr. Djoken has been serving as President of the Frederick County Branch of the NAACP since January 2004. He also currently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Frederick Community Agency, Frederick City Police Athletic League, and the Frederick Community College Committee on Diversity. Guy has been honored numerous times for his outstanding service to the community. Most recently, Hood College presented its 2006 Thurgood Marshall Award to Mr. Djoken. The award is given to a person who significantly impacts the Frederick campus of Hood College by promoting respect and the appreciation of civil rights, equality and diversity.

CHUCK FRASCATI
Charles Frascati was an American History major in college, and is currently a high school teacher. Chuck has been an active member for many years of Citizens for Global Solutions, Amnesty International and Pax Christi International.

LUCILLE HALL
Lucille Hall graduated from UMBC with a degree in Political Science in 1981 and recently received a masters degree in spiritual care and pastoral counseling from Loyola College. In 2002, she took early retirement from the State of Maryland Judiciary after working for 20 yrs as a District Court Commissioner. In 2003, she was ordained a Reverend in the Pentecostal Faith Tradition. Presently, she is a parent representative on the board of Mentor Inc, a treatment foster care agency; works as a pastoral care visitor at Howard County General Hospital; and sits on the Volunteer Auxiliary Board of Directors at that hospital. She also serves as a grief group facilitator at a treatment facility for adolescents in Baltimore City and as a contractual crisis counselor for rape victims. Recently, she went on a missionary trip to Kenya where she preached, ran in a loss and bereavement workshop, and helped build a school. She also visited Bosnia and served as a grief group facilitator for eight women who were confined to a concentration camp during the Bosnia war.

STEVE HANDY
Steven Handy directs the production of the chapter web site and newsletter. Steve earned a B.S. in Computer Science from UMBC in 2001 and an M.S. in Software Engineering at Loyola College. He is a resident of Baltimore and works at the Space Telescope Science Institute at Johns Hopkins University on the James Webb Space Telescope Science and Operations development team.

BUD HANKINS
Elton Hankins resides in Cambridge, Maryland, where he is active in community affairs. Originally from California, 'Bud' graduated from the U.S. Naval academy serving primarily in destroyers and submarines. During his thirty year career, he also studied international relations at the University of Southern California and became a politico-military planner on the staffs of the Chief of Naval Operations as well as the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Upon retiring from the navy, Bud assisted in managing the repair facilities of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces for seven years. He then returned to Maryland where he became the executive director of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce on the Eastern Shore. A consistent supporter of the United Nations, Bud has lived in Italy, Turkey and Saudi Arabia and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

HARRIET HANKINS
Before she married, Harriett Beu Hankins was a teacher of modern dance, health and physical education at Mount San Antonio College in California. She received her BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her MA in Education from the University of Southern California. In addition to raising five children, Harriett has lived and taught in Groton, Connecticut, Hawaii, San Diego, Sardinia, Ankara, Riyadh and Washington, DC. She is a founding member of the Fassett-McGee Health Center in Cambridge, MD; the Dorchester County citizen representative to the Maryland State Coastal Waterways Resource Advisory Committee; a supporter of Coastal Hospice on the Eastern Shore and a board member of the Mid-Shore League of Women Voters.

ROXANNE HUGHES-WHEATLAND (Secretary)
Roxanne Hughes-Wheatland is a member of the League of Women Voters of Howard County and her portfolio includes the United Nations. She is also a psychologist interested in international issues as they relate to those with developmental disabilities. She lives in Columbia, Maryland and is employed by Kennedy Krieger Institute in the Department of Neuropsychology.

IVOR JONES
H. Ivor Jones, M.D. was born in Wales and in 1939 attended the League of Nations International School in Geneva, Switzerland. During WWII, Ivor served as an intelligence officer in the Parachute Regiment. In 1951, he graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School and began studies at the University of Washing on a Fulbright Scholarship. Ivor served at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Kansas from 1955 to 1963 on a fellowship and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2003. He has been maried to his lovely wife, Jean, for 53 years. Ivor enjoys working with the League of Women Voters, cabinet woodworking, water colour painting, and being a granddad.

ALISON MCCARTNEY
Alison McCartney, Ph.D. is the Director of the International Studies Program and a member of the Political Science Department at Towson University. Dr. McCartney is also in charge of Towson University's Model UN Program for high school students in Baltimore County. She recently presented a paper at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association titled "Where Civic Engagement is Forgotten: How We Can Practice What We Preach in International Relations." In this paper, she suggests "joining service-learning techniques with traditional political science teaching methods" to improve student understanding of "how international power disparities affect political, economic, environmental, and other social issues" in the student's own local community. She has a book coming out soon.

EBONI ROBERSON
Eboni Roberson graduated with a BA in Japanese studies from University of Maryland College Park. Currently, she is attending Morgan State University pursuing an MA in International Studies. Eboni works as a graduate assistant in the International Studies Department, serves as a liaison between the graduate students and administration as a representative on the Graduate Student Advisory Board and is a new member of Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society. She has traveled around Asia, studying at both Ewha Women's University in South Korea and Shikoku Teacher's College in Japan studying Asian languages and cultures. Currently, Eboni is working on a thesis tentatively titled "Immigration and Labor Migration and its Societal Effects in South Korea" and has applied for a Fulbright Grant to continue studies on this topic in country.

JACKI RONE
Jacki Rone received a Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan State College, Masters in Education from Johns Hopkins University, and has done post graduate work at Coppin State College, Towson State University, and Lehman College. She has spent 24 years in a variety of jobs in the Baltimore City School System including Teacher, Assistant Principal, Educational Consultant, Mentor, and Admissions Director. She has also found time to serve as Director of the Friends School Summer Writing Opportunity Program, Facilitator for Gifted and Talented Education for the Maryland State Department of Education, and Coordinator of the Henry Hall Endowment Scholarship Program for the National Aquarium. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and serves in several community and service organizations.

RUTH SMITH (Vice President)
Ruth E. Smith previously served as interim Co-chair of the UNA-MD and as the Chair of the Events Committee. In that capacity, she organized our October UN Day Celebration at Towson University and our November bus trip to the UN, as well as the April, 2007 forum featuring Gillian Sorensen, Senior Advisor at the UN Foundation. She is a long term member and past Board member of the League of Women Voters of Baltimore County and is currently Co-chair of that organization's UN/Trade Committee.
