GOVERNOR O'MALLEY PROCLAIMS OCTOBER 24 UNITED NATIONS DAY IN MARYLAND In honor of the Sixty-Second Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Governor Martin O'Malley issued a proclamation declaring October 24 as United Nations Day for the State of Maryland. In conjunction with this year's UN Day theme, Combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other Major Diseases, Governor O'Malley named Robert C. Gallo, M.D., Director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as Honorary United Nations Day Chairman. Although best known for his co-discovery that the HIV virus was the cause of AIDS, Dr.Gallo and his team also pioneered the development of the HIV blood test in the early 80s. In 1996, his discovery that a natural compound known as chemokines can block the HIV virus and halt the progression of AIDS was hailed by Science magazine as one of that year's most important scientific breakthroughs. He has recently received a $15 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a potential vaccine. RECENT NEWS AND EVENTS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
